Don’t Be Afraid of Winning

November 26th, 2007 · No Comments

“Playing Small does not serve the world.” Nelson Mandela

I’ve spent the greater portion of my life appeasing others. Limiting drama was the name of the game. If it meant trying not quite so hard in a one-on-one basketball game with my best friend to preserve our experience the rest of the day, I would.

You see I had extremely competitive friends. They would do anything to win. It wasn’t worth it to me. I enjoyed their friendship more than winning a meaningless basketball game. Pride was the only result of winning, I determined…oh and a sour friendship for the next couple of hours.

Though this may have been commendable in the early stages of life, adult life it isn’t. Winning daily, in ethical ways, is necessary and commendable. The world is a better place when I am on the top of my game. I’m a better person when I’m on the top of my game. I am happier, more focused, more driven, more inspired…

It’s taken victory upon victory for me to understand this. My childhood had instilled a fear of winning. No longer am I afraid.

What holds you back from winning more often than you currently do? Don’t hold back, be excellent at what you do. Win! And love every minute of it!

Live and be well,
