Defending One’s Resolution Part III: Short Term Memory Loss

April 2nd, 2008 · No Comments

We have our goal.  We know where we want to be.  We have the image in our mind.  A better person.  A stronger person.  A smarter person.  A more productive worker.  We’ve even drawn up the game plan.  However:

when the alarm clock goes off at 6am…

when we walk out the door after a stressful, tiring day of work…

when we turn off our cell phones to read a chapter or two before bed…

Our minds, our spirit, our body decide our earlier, rational moments of planning, preparing, dreaming don’t REALLY know what’s best.

Short term memory loss.

“if I get 30min more sleep, I’ll be more productive all day long. I must hit SNOOZE.”

“My body just needs to sit down and relax.  One quick show.”

“It’s raining.  I can go tomorrow.  This blanket is COZY.”

We are beginning month four of our battle to uphold high aspirations of 2008.  Are we still on track?  Are we maintaining the same energy levels as January?

Or are we plagued with Short Term Memory Loss?  Are we forgetting our plans set forth 8 hrs before when the alarm was set?  Are we forgetting our plans designed in January?

I urge you to get back to living by your rational moments.  Listen to yourself during these times of reflection, inspiration, and desire.  Let them lead you.

If you’re sick, of course, get extra rest.  Plans will need to have some flexibility.

However, if you’re healthy and have determined 6am is the necessary time to wake up in order to get your workout in, be productive at work, feel alive, and have time after work to spend time with your friends in family, then do yourself a favor and do not listen to this early morning, irrational voice.

If you’ve determined reading a chapter or two at night is necessary to relax and sleep well, stay astute, incubate new ideas or even read Classics of which your far behind, then do it.  Fight the urge to sleep for 30min.

We will be better, more alive individuals.

Live and be well,

Jeff
