No Longer Just Hippie 6/5/08

OIL PRICES UP.  GAS PRICES RECORD LEVELS.  GM SHIFTS ITS FOCUS FROM TRUCKS TO CARS.

What is your perspective?

In watching CNBC and “Squawk on the Street” and hearing all the clamor about oil prices pressuring companies bottom line, I am elated.  Each “breaking news” regarding record oil prices, gas price pressures on American families, and huge companies making dramatic changes, signifies one more American being reprogrammed to see the Opportunity in energy efficient technologies; one more individual becoming consumed by the ideas of cheaper, more efficient, less harmful ways to operate a vehicle; one more Google search taking place in order to understand our global footprint; one more individual beginning to demand these technologies for their personal use.

The beauty of America is we have the freedom to take these epiphanies and turn them into living dreams, into profits.  We have the resources to be creative.  We have the resources to influence cultures in positive ways.    Moreover, we are in the position to demand these experiences and technologies from companies.

No longer are the “Hippies” seeing the benefits of this reality.  The GM CEO has been convinced their profitability and sustainability depend on their transformation to more eco-friendly products.

In exploring this topic, I googled “global footprint” and came across this “footprint calculator”.  http://www.footprintnetwork.org/gfn_sub.php?content=calculator  Check it out.  It’s excellently done.  And quite eye opening.

How can you save money by living more efficiently?  How can you profit from these opportunities set before us?

Maybe I’m just optimistic.  Or maybe just an economist that believes when commodity prices  become too high, people get creative and find alternatives.
