Remembering a Beautiful Life 9/4/08

September 4th, 2008 · No Comments

A  beautiful and wonderful woman walk jogged into our lives one sunny day last summer.  She quietly brightened our days, this woman from the Bay Area.  She asked all the right questions at the most appropriate of times.  She came prepared each Saturday. She handed out Jolly Ranchers and pretzels when we were exhausted from a long run.  And she shed marathon wisdom upon her fearless comrades.Carolyn Samuels, you were loved by all you touched and will be missed by many.(see below for Memorial details)

Buzzword of the week: Cardboard Box Index

“An index used by some investors to gauge industrial production by using the output of cardboard boxes to predict the purchases of non-durable consumer goods.

This is considered to be a relatively good measure.  It is estimated that nearly 75 to 80 percent of all non-durable goods are shipped in corrugated containers.  Therefore, the greater the amount of cardboard boxes being made, the greater the amount of cash being invested by companies to produce goods.” -Investopedia

Do you see opportunity in these two paragraphs?  What business would be extremely profitable?

I understand many companies are working on a more green way of packaging.  Finding the right GREEN substitute for cardboard is going to be HUGE!  75 - 80 percent of all non-durables.  Who has leads on this business?  I want to be an investor!

Five points to ponder:

  1.  Oil is down to $109/barrel. Productivity rates for the second quarter revised up to 4.3%.  Service industry expands.    Unemployment numbers up last week, though expected to hold at 5.7% on the whole.    Sluggish retail sales lead markets downward.
  2.  Mortgage rates make significant drops this week.  6% conforming 30yr at 1pt.
  3.  ”Wailin’ Palin”.  Vice President candidate Sarah Palin surprised many with her abilities and commentary toward the opposing party.  The gloves come off.
  4.  Gustav thankfully was far less resentful than Katrina, however three more await in the Atlantic.  Keep your eye on “Ike”.
  5.   Dodgers making a 5 game charge.   College football already has a new number 1, USC.   The NFL kickoffs tonight, and has its first ever double header on Monday night.    Go Hawks!  And Aaron Gillen takes 4000 foot Pier to Peak Climb in a blistering 1:33 - that is 7:07 per mile!

Positives:

  •      Mortgage rates are down!  Affordability is, thus, UP!
  •      Palin offers much needed energy in the McCain camp.  Let the debates begin!
  •     SoCal is loving their sports at the moment.  But according to sports expert Lucas Herrera, “the Dodgers will blow it.”
  •    Scott DeVore and Matt Dubberley were not far behind Gillen.  Nor were the many Team in Trainers out there.  Congratulations to all that conquered the hill.

Negatives:

  •      Despite the lower oil prices and better than expected productivity and service industry numbers, the market remains skittish over a continued recession.  Retail sales slumping, car makers in need of cash infusion, and unemployment fears, all are supporting their actions.  You should be asking yourself, where are the opportunities?  Which stocks are undervalued?  Who can help you find these answers?

Services: Fearful of liquidity?

In Santa Barbara, we continued our reign of number 1 in market share in July.  We are making deals happen.  We are getting families into homes better than all others in town.    Call me to see how I may be of service to you.
