Baby Bills. Your Greatest Client is You. 5/27/09

May 27th, 2009 · 1 Comment

6000 minutes on the phone.  1000 text messages sent and received.  500 emails read and/or responded to.  15 Twitter updates.  5 LinkedIn changes.  3 evening talks.  10 coffees.  15 lunches.  And 20 client meetings.

All within 1 month of work.

For a stay at home mother or father it may look more like: 25 meals prepared.  5 trips to the grocery store.  10 loads of laundry.  15 nights of homework help.  20  sports/music/dance practices.  5 vacuum sessions.  15 dishwasher cycles.  3 sheets of baked cookies.  2000 minutes on the phone.  1 trip to the Vet.   And 4 blog updates.

Tribal Halo Effect. 5/19/09

It is awe inspiring to know, on a cellular level, we humans have memories far beyond the years in which our individual brains have been conscious.   25  years.  50 years.  75 years.  However ever old you are, your cells are older and wiser.  Your brain is no match for your cell memory of thousands of years.

Sunday night while at a concert, Kings of Leon, I felt this sensation.  I had known but two of their songs, however my cells quickly found rhythm with all of them.  There was an overwhelming cellular attraction to move in unison, unison with both the music and with thousands of concert goers to a beat founded upon a drum.

Jesusita Fire. Ovoboby. 5/11/09

May 11th, 2009 · No Comments

This past week in Santa Barbara was extremely heavy.

A subtle, single stream of smoke, drawing contrast to the beautiful green ridges behind, soon transformed into a powerfully disconnected fire.  Dual fronts on Easterly and Westerly flanks and close proximities to thousands of homes left our town overwhelmed.  Low thundering helicopters, fear, and night heat waves led us all restless into the final half of the work week.

As the fire progressed, emergency evacuations were ordered.  Cars were packed tight, the most important of personal items creating the base for all other “it would be nice to have” items.

Overcoming Fear Each Year 4/23/09

May 11th, 2009 · No Comments

In 2007, I began a new personal tradition.  I was finding certain psychological hindrances, stemming from my childhood, blocking me from invigorating experiences.  Life changing experiences that would be positive to my mind and body.

My declaration: I would overcome an irrational fear each year.

At the time: Swimming laps.  Being held under water.  Losing control of when I get to breathe.  All led to great anxiety.

I, thus, set a goal, a bit crazy to most, and surrounded myself with people who believed the goal to be perfectly normal.  I would swim the channel, 26 miles of ocean swimming beginning at 12 midnight, with a group of local swimmers.  In relay format, we would swim 20 minutes at a time.

It’s in the Numbers: Be a Match April 18th. 4/17/09

Each day 6,000 new people need a Bone Marrow match.  Multiplied out, each year 2,190,000 fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, daughters, sons, nephews, nieces, grandsons, granddaughters, and great friends are in search for their white-blood cell amigo.

The last I heard the registry had grown to over 7 million ready and willing donors.  Per Wikipedia, February 2009, the US population is up to 306 million inhabitants.  72.4% of which are over the age of 20.  Whereas, 12.6% are over the age of 65 years old.

To be eligible to donate your bone marrow, you must be between the ages of 18 and 60.  Rounding out these figures 180,000,000 Americans fall within this age bracket.
