Basic Economics: Garage Sale Superheroes. 9/1/09

Do you consider yourself more of a money maker or a money saver?

Why I ask?  Garage sales seem to be a recent theme and has me thinking about the peculiarity of the act.  The combination of the extra time of summer, fall cleansing, and the suppressing economy, have fellow Santa Barbarans emptying out their closets, garages, and living rooms onto the street.

The passer byers spend hours meddling through the piles, analyzing the details, often walking away with piles of clothes, chairs, and tables for pennies on the dollar.

Intelligent Circumlocution? Not Quite. 8/25/09

Sir Ken Robinson redefined intelligence and education in his speech at a recent TED event.  He challenged our system that consistently tells children, “you’ll never get a job doing that.”  He challenged the system that doesn’t allow children to make mistakes and dare to be wrong.

He contends our intelligence is diverse, dynamic and distinct.

However, school trains us to lose touch with first our toes, then our legs, then our waist,  on upward, with our body ultimately becoming but a vehicle to get one side of our brain around town.

Tree Hugging Biomicry Business. 8/18/09

Are you reading?  From different media sources?  Pushing yourself to consider different points of view?  Pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone?

Mohamed El-Erian, CEO and co-chief investment officer of Pimco, presents a strong case for expanding your mind.  While his father was Egypt’s ambassador to France, El-Erian remembers getting at least four newspapers delivered to his front door.  The newspapers extended from “far right” to “far left” views, from Libertarian to Communist.  His father explained to him, “unless you read different points of view, your mind will eventually close, and you’ll become a prisoner to a certain point of view that you’ll never question.”

Funemployment Crisis. 8/11/09

For Santa Barbara residence the five days of Fiesta is over.  Though it lives on in the confetti covered carpets, colorful Facebook photo albums, and strengthened community.  Let’s rest up then continue on with this renewed energy and community.

After last week’s Fiesta Siesta Market Street Report, we return to our nuggets of wisdom theme.  I thank many of you for passing along the best pieces of advice you have ever received.  Please keep them coming!
