Reality can destroy the dream, why shouldn’t the dream destroy reality” - George Moore

Last week I had the fortune of speaking to a classroom full of Cal Poly students from the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity.  The men all showed up in suits and ties, and the ladies in classy businessGeorge Moore attire.  From the outset I was impressed.  Over the course of the hour I shared with them the key points in my life thus far that led to my career in the home lending business and recent sabbatical to South America to carry out microfinance work for KIVA.org.  Listed below are 49 motivators I came up with when brainstorming the talk.

“Nice Guys Finish First” – Barrie Bergman

November 21st, 2010 · No Comments

Barrie Bergman – Founder of The Record Bar

Donald Trump has built his reputation, image and brand on the nice guy finishing last and the shrewd, selfish, cutthroat business man finishing first.  Glengary Glen Ross, the famous business movie starring Alec Baldwin, like a record repeats the need to do whatever it takes to win, no matter who you cheat and step on.  “Always Be Closing.”  The mortgage industry from 2004 – 2007 reaped huge short-term rewards in “fudging” the data points to get their borrowers homes they craved, but couldn’t afford.

If you have never met Paul, you would appreciate knowing he is as real as any man. He is a friend. He is humorous. He is humble. He gets agitated. He gets annoyed. He is playful. He daydreams. He falls into intense moments of focus. He chews on issues. He carries out ideas until the end. He looks at them from all angles. He leaves no rock unturned.

POWER OF 72:
If you have ever taken a finance class, you’ve learned of the power of 72.  For those that evaded numbers at all cost in efforts to enjoy the splashing of beautiful colors across a canvas, the power of 72 is a mathematical model used to determine how long it takes for something to double.

Rocket Scientists’ Patriotism. 6/10/09

June 10th, 2009 · No Comments

The summer months are a time of transition.  Transition out of school and into days of freedom for teachers and students.  For parents, it marks a period of creativity and management of their children, no longer willing homework completion, but now directing boredom fighting activities.   For business owners, employees begin to take extended vacations and leave the office early to get out and play in the sun, requiring managers to get creative with who to place where to pick up the slack.  And for others, it’s the perfect time to relocate and/or begin house hunting.

Barack Obama – Your New President 11/6/08

November 9th, 2008 · No Comments

Whether you agree with the election, believe wholeheartedly in Barack, and even trust him or not, this is a powerful American decision.  Yes, the fact of a black man being elected as the president of the United States is historical.  Just as historical in my mind is the way the world quickly responded to our decision.  During a time of economic strife and world hatred toward the bulling and listening inept United States, people around the globe were elated.   Commentary showed renewed hope in the world leader and its direction.  It gave millions, if not billions, hope of a strong, prosperous future.

Buzzword of the Week: Skirt Length Theory

“The idea that skirt lengths are a predictor of the stock market direction.  According to the theory, if skirts are short, it means the markets are going up.  And if skirt are long, it means the markets are heading down.

Skirts

The idea behind this theory is that shorter skirts tend to appear in times when general consumer confidence and excitement is high, meaning the markets are bullish.  In contrast, the theory says long skirts are worn more in times of fear and general gloom, indicating that things are bearish.
